You need to look at whether they can guarantee a hardness range of 48-52 HRC after heat treatment, and if they offer full traceability from melt to final plate. The factory’s reputation among die-casting tool makers is also critical, because H11 is often used for hot work tooling like aluminum die-casting dies, where thermal fatigue resistance is non-negotiable. A reliable H11 steel plate factory should provide mill test certificates showing actual values for carbon (0.32-0.45%), chromium (4.75-5.50%), molybdenum (1.10-1.75%), and vanadium (0.80-1.20%), plus sulfur and phosphorus below 0.030% each. Ask about their hardening and tempering schedule. A typical cycle for H11 involves preheating at 650°C, austenitizing at 1020-1050°C, then gas quenching at 5-10 bar pressure. They should temper twice at 540-600°C to achieve the target hardness. If the factory uses salt baths or atmosphere furnaces, you risk decarburization and uneven hardness. If you need custom sizes, the factory should use band saws with carbide blades and coolant to avoid thermal damage. Laser cutting is not recommended for H11 because it can create heat-affected zones that crack during heat treatment.

You need more than a piece of paper. A trustworthy factory will provide third-party testing from an accredited lab like SGS or Bureau Veritas. They should test for chemical composition, hardness, tensile strength, and impact toughness. For H11, typical tensile strength after heat treatment is 1800-2000 MPa, with elongation around 8-10%. Impact toughness (Charpy V-notch) should be at least 20 J at room temperature. If the factory only gives you a certificate from their own in-house lab, that’s a red flag. Insist on independent verification. Some factories also offer microstructural analysis to show the carbide distribution. You want a uniform, fine carbide size of 1-3 μm, not large clusters that can cause crack initiation. The best factories will also perform a hardness traverse across the plate cross-section to confirm uniformity.

Delivery Lead Times and Logistics

Lead times for H11 plates can vary wildly. A factory that stocks common sizes like 200x200x50 mm or 300x400x75 mm can ship within a week. Custom sizes might take 4-6 weeks because they need to order the steel from the mill. Ask about their inventory levels for your required thickness and width. If they don’t stock it, find out if they have a rolling schedule with the mill. Some factories have agreements to reserve mill capacity, which cuts lead times. Also, consider shipping costs. H11 is heavy, around 7.8 g/cm³, so a 1000x1000x100 mm plate weighs about 780 kg. A factory located near a port or major highway can reduce freight costs. If you are importing, check if the factory handles export documentation like certificates of origin and packing lists. Delays in customs can be expensive if the paperwork is wrong.

ISO 9001 certification is the baseline, but for H11, you want a factory that also follows NADCAP or AS9100 standards, especially if you are supplying the aerospace or automotive industries. These standards require rigorous process control, calibration of equipment, and regular audits. Ask to see their quality manual and non-conformance reports from the last year. For example, if you are using H11 for aluminum die-casting, they should recommend a tempering temperature of 590°C to achieve 48-50 HRC for optimal thermal fatigue resistance. If they supply to major automotive die-casters like Nemak or Ryobi, that’s a strong sign of quality. Check online forums like Practical Machinist or Eng-Tips for discussions about H11 suppliers. Look for complaints about inconsistency, cracking, or poor delivery. A factory with a long history (10+ years) and a stable management team is more reliable than a startup. Also, check if they have any patents or proprietary processes for H11 production. Some factories have developed special heat treatment cycles that improve toughness without sacrificing hardness.

Environmental and Safety Compliance

This might not be your first concern, but it matters for long-term supply. A factory that follows ISO 14001 for environmental management is less likely to face shutdowns or fines. They should have proper waste disposal for quenching oils and grinding sludge. Also, check their safety record. A high accident rate can indicate poor management and inconsistent production. Ask for their OSHA or equivalent incident rate. A factory with a low rate (under 1.0) is more likely to have stable operations. If they are located in a region with strict environmental regulations, like the EU, that’s usually a sign of higher standards.

Future Capacity and Scalability
